Canal-side heritage residences
Work in progress
Nestled along one of the city’s canals, two adjoining heritage buildings—located within the UNESCO World Heritage zone—are being transformed into a series of refined private residences. This exceptional project reinterprets Amsterdam’s architectural legacy with a contemporary sensibility.
Our studio leads the design vision with respect for the monumental character of these 17th-century buildings. In close collaboration with heritage and structural experts, original features are preserved with care, while new elements are introduced with restraint—creating a harmonious balance between past and present.
The first building, a grand canal house of approximately 1,000 m² across five floors, was commissioned in 1686 by Alida van Loon—an influential woman of her time. The residence retains extraordinary period features, including original Gilt Leather wall coverings, ornate ceiling reliefs, and hand-painted frescos. Private amenities include a gym, sauna, and a 300 m² garden—an unexpected haven in the heart of the city. Rich in history and craftsmanship, the house is regarded as one of Amsterdam’s most distinguished heritage properties.
The second building is being reimagined as three exclusive apartments of 66 m², 115 m², and 145 m². Each combines historical character with understated modern elegance and is serviced by a private lift. One residence also includes a spacious private garden.
The project is currently in its early design phase. Stay tuned for updates.
