Monumental canal-side residence
Work in progress
In this Amsterdam monumental canal house dating from 1686, with a floor area of approximately 1,100 m², a generous private residence is being created. The property forms part of the so called Vierde Uitleg (c. 1660: the final major urban expansion of the Dutch Golden Age.
The house owes its current character to a rich historical layering: a 17th-century structure with hall and staircase, 18th-century stucco decorations in the entrance hall, and a neoclassical finish added in the early 19th century. The rear room dates from this period, while the 19th-century front room still retains its original paint layer. In the alcove and in an old china cabinet, remnants of gilt-leather wallpaper were discovered; archival sources reference this “gilt-leather room” as early as 1708. Several ceilings fall into the highest heritage category, including painted leather and painted wooden examples. These historical layers form the foundation of the design and restoration vision.
The residence will be preserved as a single, unified home and reconfigured for contemporary living. The bel-étage serves as the representative floor, with formal living and dining rooms and view lines that highlight the monumental ceilings, fireplaces, and façade openings. The kitchen and family spaces will be located in the souterrain, where original monumental elements such as the stone water pump and sink will be integrated. The upper floors offer privacy and calm, accommodating bedrooms, bathrooms, and guest rooms. The large rear garden will remain fully intact.
Restoration and planning take place in close consultation with the municipality and heritage authorities.
The ambition is to preserve where possible, restore where necessary, and renew where comfort requires. At the same time, the house will be upgraded for sustainability. With this approach, the client consciously invests in the long-term preservation of a property that demonstrably requires maintenance.
