Family retreat
Timeless elegance on an unspoiled island

Along a rugged coastline lies a family retreat that reflects the untouched landscape and character of the island. This mountainous island rises steeply from clear turquoise waters and is known for its white sandy beaches, dramatic peaks, and authentic charm. It forms the perfect backdrop for the understated design style of our studio.
Throughout the home, the distant blue of the horizon draws the eye; every opening frames the panorama, ensuring the sea is always both visible and palpable.
The existing house was already cherished by the family, with an atmosphere and layout they wished to preserve. Our team found an interior with distinctive wood finishes, warm in tone and maritime in feel. These existing qualities were respected and became the foundation on which we built, subtly adding the signature of Studio Piet Boon.
Together with a local architect, we transformed the 1960s holiday home into a layered, inviting residence. Original architectural elements were preserved wherever possible, while modern interventions brought extra comfort and lightness. Soft plastered walls, warm wooden ceilings, and natural stone accents create a calm, timeless foundation.
The central living room, redesigned to make the most of light and far-reaching views, is furnished with modular pieces and sculptural lighting. In addition to rich materials, personal objects, art, and accessories give the space character and depth. For the clients, passionate readers and collectors, these elements are not decoration but an essential part of their home.
Throughout the house, colour and contrast play an important role. Travertine, lime plaster, bronze-toned details, and linen come together in a palette of earthy neutrals, complemented by warm nuances and refined accents. Openings frame nature, art, and water, while the walls serve as calm, supportive backdrops rather than barriers.
The kitchen, housed in a newly added volume, combines understated custom cabinetry with wooden stools topped with leather seats for extra character and comfort. A bespoke fireplace and an artistic dining table by a craftsman add sculptural expression. The design strikes a balance between structure and intimacy: open yet cosy, serene yet full of character.
The layout of the house offers both connection and privacy. There are multiple terraces and outdoor spaces, ranging from sheltered corners to sun-drenched lounge areas. This variety makes it suitable for gatherings of any size. Sunbeds and coffee tables carry the serene aesthetic from indoors to out, inviting moments of relaxation in the shade, by the water, or with views over the coastline.
The garden flows seamlessly into the protected natural vegetation of the surroundings, enhancing the connection with the landscape and the sea view.
The architecture responds naturally to the Mediterranean climate. Adjustable shutters and sliding panels offer flexibility: the house can be opened to let in a cool breeze or closed against strong coastal winds. Every view, opening, and passage is designed with the landscape, sea, and climate in mind. The home feels equally natural when opened to its surroundings as it does when enclosed for comfort.
The bedrooms are elegantly furnished with natural materials and carefully oriented towards the outdoors. In the bathrooms, basins carved from rough-hewn natural stone and outdoor showers offer an authentic, tactile experience.
Every choice – from architecture to interior and styling – was made with the family in mind. This is not a standard holiday house, but a lived-in, beloved home. A place shaped by people, memories, books, objects, and the rhythm of the seasons.
