Monumental urban oasis

Work in progress

In Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, a former forge and carriage workshop is being transformed into a private residence of approximately 350 m². The listed municipal monument, part of a historic row of façades, is being carefully restored and converted into a tranquil urban retreat.

The design unites Japanese refinement with the industrial soul of the building. Warm wood and soft curves contrast with cast-iron columns and the exposed steel structure, creating a subtle balance between tradition and renewal.

The structural foundation has been laid: all old floors have been removed, screw piles installed, and a reinforced, insulated concrete floor with underfloor heating completed. New steel beams will strengthen the roof and central area, while the original cast-iron columns remain visible.

The brick façade will be restored, featuring natural-stone details. The original wooden doors will be repaired and regain their arched shape. Inside, a custom bronze door handle and an antique ship porthole add character and authenticity.

Wood will take centre stage in the interior: Douglas-fir flooring in generous lengths, pine window frames and doors with rounded edges and corners. The plasterwork will follow these soft lines. A compact, sunken soaking tub will be partially integrated into the floor.

Natural light and greenery will enter through a central patio, while the roof will feature a green landscape with planters and wild vegetation, including a Japanese maple.
