Secret Sanctuary
In a leafy cul-de-sac in the city of Amsterdam, this hidden and magical place is part of a converted early 20th century industrial building. For the creative director who lives here it is her vitalizing retreat. The building’s quirky, eccentric character offered a golden opportunity to create a total design, as well as incorporating the owner’s passion for elegant, personalized and bespoke details that define ultimately the project’s unique character. The subdued color scheme that has been consistently implemented throughout the house creates the perfect backdrop for the client’s carefully curated, beautiful collection of art works and objects.
Bespoke details such as the small niches in the wall and banister are subtle references to the resident’s many travels to other cultures. The sunken bath in the sleeping suite is reminiscent of a hammam. Matching the desired relaxing atmosphere of the room.
Guillaume Grey, an exclusive marble used for the kitchen’s central table and island has been finished in different ways; one part was sandblasted and another honed. The different textures add interest to the natural stone.
By moving the living areas and kitchen to higher floors, optimum privacy was created above street level. The tall trees provide a different incidence of light through the seasons. In the summer the treetops embrace the secluded terrace with the relaxing sound of rustling leaves.
