Family chalet, Switzerland

Work in progress

At the foot of a ski slope in the Swiss village of Verbier, Studio Piet Boon is transforming two existing chalets into a single, generous family retreat spanning 750 m². The chalets are connected underground, creating one spacious, functional, and warm home.

The design is being developed in three phases and includes a full redesign of both the interior and exterior. The layout and circulation are tailored to family life, with a focus on hospitality, comfort, and relaxation.

Spatial layout & functions

Inside, a new balance is created between open living areas and more intimate zones. The floor plan features a large living room, spacious kitchen and dining area, a wellness zone, ski storage with après-ski bar, a TV room, and sleeping quarters for sixteen guests.

Views & experience

The exterior and terraces are redesigned to maximize the captivating mountain views. Strategically placed openings enhance the connection to the surrounding landscape. With direct access to the slopes, skiing is possible from the chalet itself — a rare luxury.

Materiality & character

While the design respects the traditional chalet architecture, it introduces contemporary refinement. Robust materials such as coarse natural stone and planed wood are paired with honed stone and subtle detailing. This layered approach is also reflected in the custom furniture: a play of rugged finishes and elegant lines, in harmony with the home’s atmosphere.

A quiet yet characterful design that enhances the spirit of the place and allows for both connection and retreat — just as a family chalet should.
