Carriage house, California

Work in progress

This project focuses on the renovation and expansion of a historically significant property in Montecito, California. The original structure, the Carriage House, was designed by the renowned architect George Washington Smith. It once served as the garage for a much larger estate that was later divided and sold. The Carriage House remains a unique piece of architectural history, and the challenge lies in respecting its legacy while introducing a contemporary addition that feels natural and harmonious with the environment.

The goal of the renovation is to maintain the integrity of the original sandstone, timber, and steel doorframes, ensuring that the distinctive characteristics of the building are preserved. However, the client’s vision extends beyond simply restoring the house; they want it to evolve into a timeless, refined home, incorporating the signature style of Studio Piet Boon.

In addition to renovating the original Carriage House, a guest house and pool are being added to the property. The new spaces will offer contemporary living amenities while maintaining a balance with the original home.

The house is set within a beautiful natural environment, surrounded by mature vegetation such as Live Oaks and Monstera Deliciosa. The design will emphasize a smooth connection between the indoors and the outdoors, with expansive glass openings that invite the landscape into the heart of the home
